Directions and Cost

Directions: On Google Maps type in “Kumbya Peninsula”.  This will show you the best way to get here.

Option 1

  • Go towards Gitarama (now called Muhanga).  Before city center, turn right onto NR7 towards Karongi (aka Kibuye).  Continue following signs to Karongi on NR7.
  • In Kibuye/Karongi – go straight through the first traffic circle and through town. At the next traffic circle, take the last exit which is up the hill.
  • Continue for 70 kilometers.  The Kumbya turn is between kilometer marker 13 and 12 (white markers on the road).
  • There is a huge sign that says “Kumbya Kivu Life Eco Lodge” on your right – take this road.  This lodge is not Kumbya but we are past it.  Follow dirt road between duka shops and go straight to peninsula.

Option 2

  • Go to Butare/Huye.
  • From Butare continue to Cyangugu through Nyungwe forest.  About 10 km after Nyungwe forest you’ll go down a long escarpment and then come to a significant cemented intersection.  You’ll turn right at the intersection.  Follow that road to Nyamasheke.  Kumbya is about 6 km after Nyamasheke on the left.
