Directions and Cost

Directions: On Google Maps type in “Kumbya Peninsula”.  This will show you the best way to get here.

Option 1

  • Go towards Gitarama (now called Muhanga).  Before city center, turn right onto NR7 towards Karongi (aka Kibuye).  Continue following signs to Karongi on NR7.
  • In Kibuye/Karongi – go straight through the first traffic circle and through town. At the next traffic circle, take the last exit which is up the hill.
  • Continue for 70 kilometers.  The Kumbya turn is between kilometer marker 13 and 12 (white markers on the road).
  • There is a huge sign that says “Kumbya Kivu Life Eco Lodge” on your right – take this road.  This lodge is not Kumbya but we are past it.  Follow dirt road between duka shops and go straight to peninsula.

Option 2

  • Go to Butare/Huye.
  • From Butare continue to Cyangugu through Nyungwe forest.  About 10 km after Nyungwe forest you’ll go down a long escarpment and then come to a significant cemented intersection.  You’ll turn right at the intersection.  Follow that road to Nyamasheke.  Kumbya is about 6 km after Nyamasheke on the left.
  • There is a huge sign that says “Kumbya Kivu Life Eco Lodge” on your left – take this road.  This lodge is not Kumbya but we are past it.  Follow dirt road between duka shops and go straight to peninsula.

Cost

  • Kumbya Property Use as of August 2022

    At this time, there are three options for visiting the peninsula,

    1. Day Use (Rates are per person, per day)    Please observe Covid protection precautions.
      1. Residents of the Nyamasheke area (Includes Kibagora Hospital staff) – 2000 Rwf per adult or child
      1. All other visitors not residing in the Nyamasheke area – 4000 Rwf per adult and 2000 Rwf per child (under 12 yrs old)
      2. Example: Day Use: A family (not residing in Nyamasheke) – 2 adults, 3 children (under 12 years) – 2×4000 + 3×2000 = 14,000 RWF per day
    2. Camping on the Peninsula (With your own camping gear in designated campsite areas)
      1. Camping is the per person day use rate + 1000 RWF per person per night.
      2. Example: (Same Family of 5 as above) – 14,000 (day rate) + 5×1000 for camping = 19,000 RWF per night
    3. Cabin Usage is Limited and is the per person day use rate + 3000 Rwf per person per night

       

Payment: Made by MoMo to *182*8*1*434478# to Kumbya Centre Association or by other special arrangement.

      • The gate will be kept locked. A key code is needed to enter. (A gate key is kept at the Kibogora Guest House for hospital staff and Guest House clients only.)
      • A guard will ask you to sign-in to the visitor record book. (As individuals or as a family unit.)
